Dr. Jacobus was removed by his parents from these deleterious surroundings and sent to a small school in the town as an out-pupil. Here the state of affairs was even worse. The dormitory contained eleven beds and was under the superintendence of an old, gouty usher who slept in an adjoining room, the door of which was supposed to be kept open. As soon as he began to snore, one of the young pupils, a born-inverted, an account of whose life we will give one of these days, dressed without making any noise, pushed the door gently to, knelt down successively at the bed of each of his companions, lifted up the edge of the counterpane and putting his head underneath, indulged in a complete "drawing of the feather." Prions are an amazing class of disease. Not bacterial, nor viral- rather, they are protein based. Mad cow disease (BSE) is the best known prion disease, but there are others.
Humans might be infected by prions in 2 ways:
1. Acquired infection (diet and following medical procedures such as surgery, growth hormone injections, corneal transplants) i.e. infectious agent implicated.
2. Apparent hereditary mendelian transmission where it is an autosomal and dominant trait. This is not prima facie consistent with an infectious agent.
This is one of the features that single out prion diseases for particular attention. They are both infectious and hereditary diseases. They are also sporadic, in the sense that there are also cases in which there is no known risk factor although it seems likely that infection was acquired in one of the two ways listed above.
Kuru is the condition which first brought prion diseases to prominence in the 1950s. Found in geographically isolated tribes in the Fore highlands of New Guinea. Established that ingesting brain tissue of dead relatives for religious reasons was likely to be the route of transmission. They ground up the brain into a pale grey soup, heated it and ate it. Clinically, the disease resembles CJD [Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease- the human form of BSE]. Other tribes in the vicinity with same religious habit did not develop the disease. It is speculated that at some point in the past a tribe member developed CJD, and as brain tissue is highly infectious this allowed the disease to spread. Afflicted tribes were encouraged not to ingest brain tissue and the incidence of disease rapidly declined and is now almost unknown.
One of the persons executed at the first burning, a prostitute, was heard repeating the exorcism which was supposed to have the power of raising the arch enemy in the form of a goat. This precious specimen of human folly has been preserved by Horst in his Zauberbibliothek. It ran as follows, and was to be repeated slowly, with many ceremonies and wavings of the hand:

The Arab is, in fact, an active Pederast and a Sodomist, cultivating with an equal taste the male and female orifice; it matters little to him which it is. I have already made this remark in the chapter upon Sodomy. I give a few fresh details here.

The rubbing and the passage of the penis is enough to dilate the anus and to produce the relaxation of the anus and the effacement of the radiated folds. Therefore they always show themselves in cases of habitual Sodomy. Just as in vaginal defloration, the tonicity of the vulvary constrictor diminishes little by little, the muscle becomes relaxed and anal coition is easily effected; so, in anal defloration, if I may make this comparison, the tonicity of the constrictor of the anus is gradually lost, the sphincter insensibly grows relaxed, and anal coition is easily performed.
At the same time as these two morbid phenomena, if we dilate the anal orifice with the fingers, we find that the rectal mucous membrane forms folds and sometimes a thick, projecting pad. These signs are frequently met with in women who have been addicted to Sodomy for a considerable period, and particularly in those who are affected with lesions of the vulva, which, as I have remarked, oppose an obstacle to vaginal coition. As to the caruncles or excrescences, lesions called by the Latin satiric writers christæ or mariscæ, and considered by Zacchias as an habitual sign of Sodomy, I have never come across them
Together with these anal deformations and lesions, we find a thinness of the sphincter, an upward compression of the anus and a dilatation of the anal orifice to such an extent that the patients acknowledge to the involuntary escape of fecal matter and intestinal gases. In consequence of this anal dilatation, one, two and even three fingers can be easily introduced into the rectum. On stretching the buttocks apart, we observe a more or less gaping hole which enables us to perceive certain lesions with which the mucous membrane may be affected, such as ulcerations, hemorrhoids, fistulæ of the anus, etc. These lesions, considered by Dr. Venot (of Bordeaux), as a consequence of habitual, inveterate Sodomy, dating back to a long period, are, in my opinion, not so at all. With the exception of inflammatory lesions and the traumatic lesions of recent, brutal and violent Sodomy, I have never observed any fistulæ or hemorrhoids in the patients who have come under my examination.
These lesions appear quite apart from inveterate Sodomy. They may exist together with it, but they are not a consequence of it.

Kong Jing-wen has paid £5,700 to have both of her legs broken and stretched on a rack. The pretty college graduate is now lying in bed, clearly still in considerable pain three days after a doctor sawed through the flesh and bone below her knee to insert what looks an awful lot like knitting needles through the length of her tibiae.
These giant steel pins are connected by eight screws punched horizontally through her ankle and calf to a steel cage surrounding each leg. Once the bone starts to heal, these cages will act like a medieval torture device - each day over the next few months Kong will turn the screws a fraction and stretch her limbs more and more until she has grown by 8cm.

The complex and time-consuming procedure [she is] willing to endure was initially developed in Russia for people with stunted growth, mismatched legs or disfigurements. But these days the operation is increasingly used for cosmetic purposes.

Each procedure has three stages. First comes the operation in which the legs are broken and steel pins - 27cm long and 8mm in diameter - are pushed through the bone. These are fixed to an external frame by eight or so screws, each of which is 4mm in diameter. Next comes the stretching, which is carried out over several months (depending on how much the customer wants to grow) by turning the screws each day and lengthening the bone at the point where it was broken. When the stretching is completed the external frame is removed. In the final stage, the steel pins are left in place for about a year as a support for the newly regenerated bone. Once it has hardened, the pins are removed.
This is a clear sign of habitual passive Pederasty, a view upon which all authors are agreed.
The relaxation of the anal sphincter entails several consequences and gives rise to various symptoms which represent the various degrees of the laxity of the sphincter.
The first degree is the effacement of the radiated folds of the margin of the anus, or the mark of Zacchias, the author who gave an excellent description of it some long time ago. Casper and Tardieu have agreed to attribute a great value to this mark, which I think it unnecessary to describe to you, its statement being sufficiently clear.
Then comes the permanent dilation of the anus. The mucous membrane of the lower portion of the rectum, Tardieu says, becomes folded together at the anal orifice, so as to form a thick and projecting pad. In certain cases, these folds form a kind of caruncle or excrescence which sometimes resembles the vaginal nymphæ of a woman. These excrescences are the crests, or marisques, which the descriptions of satirical Latin authors have made famous.
At a still higher degree, the anal orifice is reduced to a gaping hole, sometimes very wide, formed by a circular ring without contractility or relief.
But remember, with regard to this symptom and in order to avoid regretful errors, that in a corpse, the natural relaxation of the anal sphincter very easily produces the gaping of the orifice; the permanent dilation of the anus has not therefore in this case the same value and significance as it has in the living subject.

Armin Meiwes, a native of the German town of Rotenburg, is on trial for killing and eating another man. The problem is that Meiwes advertised on the internet for someone willing to be eaten. Six people responded, and Bernd Brandes, an engineer from Berlin was chosen. Meiwes first cut off Brandes' penis, which he fried and of which they both partook.
The unprecedented case has proved problematic for German lawyers who discovered that cannibalism is not illegal in Germany.
Instead, they have charged Meiwes with murder for the purposes of sexual pleasure and with "disturbing the peace of the dead".
The accused, however, has a unique defence: that his victim actually agreed to be killed and eaten.

"With every bite, my memory of him grew stronger," he said.
Behind bars, Meiwes told detectives that he had consumed his victim with a bottle of South African red wine, had got out his best cutlery and decorated his dinner table with candles. He tasted of pork, he added.

Yesterday Meiwes told the court that he had felt lonely and neglected as a child after his father walked out on the family. He had fantasised about having a blond "younger brother", who he could keep forever by "consuming him".
